What is a Therapeutic Community?
Evidence has demonstrated that a supportive community that values healthy living underpins a successful rehabilitation and reduces risk of relapse.
A Therapeutic Community (TC) is a treatment program in which the community itself, through self-help and mutual support, is the principal means for promoting personal change and a healthy outlook to life.
In a Therapeutic Community, residents and staff participate in the management and operation of the community through work crews, group therapy and psycho education groups; thus contributing to a psychologically and physically safe learning environment where change can occur. There is a focus on the bio-psychosocial, emotional and spiritual dimensions of substance use, drawing on the community to heal individuals and support the development of the various behaviours, attitudes and values of healthy living.
